Mouse Entry Prevention and Weep Vent Exclusion – Vaughan

Job Overview

Location: Vaughan, Ontario
Structure: Detached two-storey residential home with brick veneer and attached garage
Problem: Mouse activity and droppings reported inside the kitchen
Service: Mouse treatment and exterior exclusion
Visits: Two visits

Summary

We were contacted regarding mouse activity inside a residential home after droppings were observed in the kitchen area. Our team completed a two-visit service consisting of a full exterior inspection, interior mouse treatment performed by a licensed exterminator, and a follow-up exclusion service to address exterior entry points.

Background / Property Context

The property is a detached two-storey house with red brick cladding on the first level and an attached garage. Brick veneer construction includes multiple weep vents and mortar joints at grade, which can present entry opportunities for mice if left unprotected.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported ongoing mouse activity indoors, including visible droppings in the kitchen. The primary concern was stopping interior activity and preventing further mice from entering the home.

Inspection & Findings

During the initial visit, a full exterior inspection was completed. Multiple unprotected weep vents were identified around the brick exterior. Several gaps along mortar joints and brick courses were also observed at various elevations. These openings were consistent with potential mouse entry points.

Interior inspection confirmed mouse activity consistent with the homeowner’s report.

Cause Analysis

Mice commonly enter homes through small exterior openings at ground level, particularly around weep vents and deteriorated mortar joints. Brick veneer homes with multiple vents provide concealed access into wall cavities when protective inserts are not installed. Seasonal pressure and nearby food sources can increase the likelihood of interior activity.

Treatment / Removal

Interior mouse treatment was completed by a licensed exterminator in accordance with Ontario Ministry of the Environment guidelines. Tamper-resistant bait stations containing commercial-grade rodenticide were placed in areas of confirmed activity. The treatment was designed to reduce the existing mouse population prior to exterior exclusion work.

Exclusion & Repairs

On the second visit, following customer approval, our team completed full weep vent exclusion. A total of sixty-five stainless steel weep vent inserts were installed across the exterior brickwork. These inserts allow proper ventilation and drainage while preventing rodents from accessing wall cavities.

No structural modifications were required beyond the installation of the vent inserts.

Outcome & Confirmation

After completion of the exclusion work, no further mouse activity was reported inside the home. The exterior entry points identified during the inspection were secured, and the structure was left protected against future rodent entry through weep vents.

Technician Notes

The inspection and exclusion work were completed by our technician, Dylan. Exterior conditions were suitable for installation, and all identified weep vents were accessible at the time of service. Photo documentation shows unprotected vent openings prior to work and stainless steel inserts installed flush within the brick veneer.
