Squirrel Activity Investigation and Roofline Exclusion — Vaughan

Job Overview

Location: Vaughan, Ontario
Structure: Detached two-storey brick house with attached garage
Problem: Reported wildlife activity in the attic during early morning hours
Service: Squirrel removal and roofline exclusion
Visits: 1

Summary

We attended a residential property in Vaughan following reports of early morning attic noise consistent with squirrel activity. A full exterior roof inspection was completed, followed by preventative exclusion work across roofline components to reduce the risk of future wildlife entry.

Background / Property Context

The home is a two-storey brick structure with a sloped asphalt shingle roof, multiple plastic roof vents, and plumbing vent penetrations. These features are commonly targeted by squirrels for nesting and access, particularly during seasonal activity peaks.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported recurring sounds in the attic during the morning hours, raising concerns about squirrels entering or nesting within the roof structure.

Inspection & Findings

During the exterior roof inspection, our team did not observe a single, clearly defined attic entry opening. However, multiple roofline components were identified as potential vulnerability points. Nesting material consistent with squirrel activity was observed on the roof surface near vent areas.

Cause Analysis

Squirrels are drawn to rooflines that provide warmth, shelter, and elevated access points. Plastic roof vents and plumbing penetrations can be exploited over time through chewing or displacement. Even without a visible attic breach, nesting activity on the roof indicates repeated use of the structure by squirrels.

Treatment / Removal

As no active attic opening was identified, direct interior removal was not required. Nesting material observed on the roof was removed, and affected areas were disinfected to reduce scent cues that could attract returning wildlife. All work was completed using humane, non-lethal methods.

Exclusion & Repairs

Preventative exclusion was completed across the roof to address identified risk areas:

  • Eight galvanized steel roof vent covers were installed over existing plastic vents.
  • Galvanized steel mesh was secured at the base of three plumbing vents.
  • Three squirrel nests on the roof were removed and the surrounding areas disinfected.

These measures were installed to withstand chewing and weather exposure while maintaining proper roof ventilation.

Outcome & Confirmation

All exclusion components were secured during the same visit. With nesting material removed and vulnerable roofline areas reinforced, the risk of continued squirrel activity was significantly reduced. No further activity was reported following completion of the work.

Technician Notes

The inspection and exclusion work were completed by Ardian. All roof access was performed safely, and exclusion materials were fitted flush to existing roof components to preserve function and appearance. Photos document installed vent covers, mesh protection, and pre-removal nesting material.
