Rodent Exclusion Inspection and Exterior Prevention – Vaughan

Job Overview

Location: Vaughan, Ontario
Structure: Two-storey detached residential home with brick exterior and attached garage
Problem: Prior mouse activity and concern about potential rodent entry points
Service: Rodent exclusion inspection and exterior preventative exclusion
Visits: Two

Summary

Our team completed a two-visit rodent exclusion service at a detached residential property in Vaughan. The work focused on identifying and securing exterior entry points commonly used by mice, including weep vents and downspout openings. Preventative exclusion measures were installed to reduce the risk of future rodent entry.

Background / Property Context

The property is a two-storey detached home with beige brick construction and an attached garage. Brick veneer construction includes numerous weep vents and service penetrations, which can create potential access points for rodents if left unprotected.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported previous issues with mice and requested a full exterior rodent exclusion inspection. No active interior infestation was reported at the time of service. The goal was preventative exclusion to reduce the likelihood of future rodent entry.

Inspection & Findings

During the initial exterior inspection, our technician identified a high number of unprotected weep vents around the structure, along with multiple downspout openings terminating near grade. Exterior rodent activity was observed around foundation areas, consistent with mice using the perimeter of the home for travel and shelter.

A total of one hundred and fourteen weep vents were present, all of which were accessible from ground level or low elevations. Five downspouts were also identified as potential entry points due to open terminations.

Cause Analysis

Brick veneer homes rely on weep vents to manage moisture, but these openings can also allow mice to access wall cavities. When vents and downspouts are left unscreened, rodents are able to enter concealed spaces without needing to damage building materials. The number of vents on this structure increased overall exposure risk.

Treatment / Removal

No interior rodent treatment was required. During the second visit, an exterior rodent treatment was completed by a licensed exterminator in accordance with Ontario Ministry of the Environment guidelines to address exterior activity prior to final exclusion.

Exclusion & Repairs

Preventative exclusion work was completed on the second visit and included:

  • Installation of 114 stainless steel vented weep vent inserts, allowing airflow while preventing rodent entry
  • Installation of galvanized steel mesh at five downspout exit points
  • Sealing over mesh installations to prevent displacement and improve durability

All materials were installed flush with existing surfaces to maintain proper drainage and ventilation.

Outcome & Confirmation

Following completion of the exclusion work, all identified exterior entry points were secured. The property perimeter was reinspected, and no additional openings were observed. The homeowner was advised that exclusion was complete and that no further rodent activity had been reported at the time of service completion.

Technician Notes

The work was carried out by our technician Luigi, who completed a full perimeter inspection during the first visit and performed all exclusion installations during the second visit. Weather and site access allowed full completion without limitations.
