Job Overview
Location: Vaughan, Ontario
Structure: Detached two-storey house with yellow brick exterior and attached garage
Problem: Squirrel activity observed entering the roof through a plumbing vent
Service: Squirrel removal and roofline exclusion
Visits: 3
Summary
We were contacted regarding squirrel activity in the roof area of a detached home in Vaughan. A full roof inspection identified an open plumbing vent as the primary entry point. Humane removal was completed using a one-way door, followed by targeted exclusion work to protect additional vulnerable roof penetrations. A final visit confirmed successful removal and long-term prevention.
Background / Property Context
The property is a two-storey detached home with an asphalt shingle roof and multiple roof penetrations, including plumbing vents. These features are common access points for squirrels when left unprotected, particularly on homes with clear roofline access.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported seeing a squirrel entering the roof near the porch overhang. Ongoing noise and visual confirmation suggested attic access through the roof.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial inspection, our technician identified an open plumbing vent as the main entry point. The vent opening was large enough to allow a squirrel to enter directly into the attic space. Additional plumbing vents were noted as potential secondary access points due to similar exposure.
Cause Analysis
Open or unprotected plumbing vents are a frequent entry point for squirrels, as they provide direct access through the roof without requiring damage to shingles. Rooflines with multiple penetrations increase the likelihood of wildlife entry if screening or protective barriers are not installed. Seasonal activity and roof accessibility further contribute to this type of intrusion.
Treatment / Removal
On the first visit, a one-way door was installed over the identified plumbing vent to allow the squirrel to exit the attic safely without being able to re-enter. This method ensured humane, non-lethal removal while maintaining attic ventilation function.
Exclusion & Repairs
After removal activity ceased, exclusion work was completed to prevent future access. This included:
- Installation of galvanized steel vent cages over two additional plumbing vents
- Removal of the one-way door once vacancy was confirmed
- Sealing and securing the original entry point following door removal
All materials were mechanically fastened and formed to sit flush with the roof surface.
Outcome & Confirmation
On the final visit, no further squirrel activity was reported. The one-way door was removed, the entry point was sealed, and all exclusion work was inspected and found to be holding properly. The roofline was left fully protected, and the homeowner reported no additional wildlife issues following completion.
Technician Notes
The initial entry was a plumbing vent, which is a common but often overlooked access point. All identified vulnerable vents were reinforced with galvanized steel protection. Work was completed by technician Ardian over three visits, including final confirmation of successful exclusion.
