Job Overview
Location: Vaughan, Ontario
Structure: Large two-storey residential home with wraparound decking
Problem: Wildlife odour and animal remains discovered in basement ceiling
Service: Raccoon removal and exterior exclusion
Visits: 2
Summary
We were contacted to address ongoing odours and suspected rodent activity inside the home. During inspection, the scope changed when a larger wildlife presence was identified. Our team completed humane raccoon removal, followed by exterior exclusion and confirmation that no further activity remained.
Background / Property Context
The property is a large, two-storey home with extensive decking surrounding the structure. The deck connects closely to landscaping features and window wells, creating concealed ground-level voids that can be accessed by wildlife if not properly protected.
Customer Concern
The homeowner initially reported dead rats in the walls and persistent odours inside the basement. When part of the basement ceiling was opened for investigation, it became clear that the source was not limited to rodents and required immediate wildlife assessment.
Inspection & Findings
During the first visit, our technician conducted a full exterior inspection focusing on deck connections, window wells, and ground-level access points. While roof access was considered, findings suggested entry occurred at ground level. A deceased raccoon was confirmed inside the basement ceiling area, indicating prior access from outside.
Visible conditions around the deck showed disturbed soil consistent with wildlife movement. A window well connected to the deck structure was identified as the primary entry point.
Cause Analysis
Raccoons are opportunistic and will use ground-level gaps near decks and window wells to access warm, sheltered voids. The close connection between the deck and the foundation reduced visibility of entry points. Over time, repeated access allowed the animal to reach the basement ceiling area.
Treatment / Removal
The deceased raccoon was removed from the ceiling area, and affected sections were addressed to eliminate odour sources. To manage the possibility of additional raccoon activity under the deck, a humane one-way door was installed at the identified entry point to allow any remaining wildlife to exit without re-entry.
Exclusion & Repairs
The perimeter of the deck was trenched, and galvanized steel mesh was installed to exclude access beneath the structure and around the window well. All exclusion materials were secured below grade to prevent digging and re-entry.
Outcome & Confirmation
On the second visit, the homeowner reported no further wildlife activity. The one-way door was removed, sealed permanently, and all exclusion work was inspected. No additional signs of raccoon presence were observed, and the site remained wildlife-free following completion.
Technician Notes
The work was completed over two visits. The initial inspection and exclusion plan were carried out by our technician, Richard, with attention to ground-level access points around the deck. Final confirmation verified that the exclusion remained intact and effective, with no further issues reported.
